Day program

We leave Paramaribo for a drive to the beautiful Brownsberg Nature Park. Visitors of this protected nature park will enjoy fabulous views of the nearby Brokopondo Lake and surrounding tropical rainforest. Main attractions of the park are the numerous nature trails to the refreshing streams and small waterfalls interspersed throughout the mountain and the encounters with the spectacular flora and fauna of the area. After the hike to the waterfalls, lunch can be consumed in the local restaurant. Finally we return to Paramaribo.

You will be visiting plantations that have stood over a hundred years, and witness the remnants of once-thriving plantations including sugar, coffee and tobacco plantations. You will also gain the opportunity to explore some of the fishing villages in the area. Different areas in the district may also be explored and introduce you to authentic depictions of the Surinamese lifestyle. 

During this tour, animals in their natural habitat can also be observed and pictures can be freely taken. Apes, unique birds and giant lizards will likely be encountered. Commewijne also has a natural beauty, accentuated by its range of diverse plants and trees. 

There is plenty of history, culture and nature to be explored and - with the help of your guide - your knowledge regarding Suriname's diverse history and culture will be broadened.

  • 8.30 hr - Departure @ 't VAT (Klein Waterstraat / Kleine Dwarsstraat) - pickup and departure in small airconditioned minivans
  • 9.00 hr - 10.30 hr - A rest stop will be made for consumption of food and beverages, and toilet breaks. During the drive, the guide will be regularly informing travelers about the history of important places that may be encountered. 
  • 11.00 hr - 17.00 - Group will arrive in the Commewijne District and be guided towards different locations in the area, including plantations. During this time, travelers will be educated on various aspects of Commewijne's history/culture, such as the notorious slave past that had led to the building of these plantations. Snacks and drinks will also be included during this time.
  • 17.30 - 18.00 hr - Ride back to the starting point : 't VAT
